Thousands of root canal are performed every day in the United States. While a lot of people dread this procedure, advanced technology has made it almost painless. But you will have to be careful afterward to make sure you heal properly.
Dos and Don’ts
The most important thing to remember after having a root canal is to do whatever you can to protect the tooth. Stay away from any hard or crunchy foods. While you’ll need to maintain your oral hygiene, of course, you’ll need to take it easy when brushing the area that was worked on. Be gentle, especially when it comes to flossing. Never force flossing in that area – if you have trouble, call your dentist.
Another important thing to do will be to get a crown placed on the area where the root canal was performed. This will protect the tooth and keep it from suffering any damage in the future. The crown will be placed once your mouth has healed.
Dealing With Discomfort
While a root canal will usually result in only minimal discomfort, you may still need to take pain medicine for a couple of days. The good news is that you probably won’t need any sort of prescription medication. Over-the-counter medications should relieve any discomfort you may experience.
